In June, South Suburban’s Public Art Committee installed three new sculptures, which are part of the District’s Art-on-Loan program at Goodson Recreation Center. The new and unique sculptures are located in Goodson’s courtyard and main entrance.
Dragon Fly, by Kyle Ocean, stands nine feet high and is composed of mild steel. Ocean is a sculpture artist from the Pacific Northwest, now residing in Fort Collins, whose work is concept driven and centered on geographical exploration and public involvement.
Eye Love You, by Justin Deister, was inspired by a note his daughter left him in symbols. He interpreted that phrase in his sculpture, starting with the letterform for “U”. It is comprised of metal, wood and paint. Deister resides in Boulder, Colo., and has exhibited public art pieces in several communities along the front range.
Spiral, by Joseph “Gary” Manuel, stands four feet high and was created with steel and plywood. Manuel resides in Denver and worked for 30 years as a cabinetmaker. He often uses wood and metal together, focusing on angles, spheres and circles in most of his designs.
The District’s Art-on-Loan program allows for artist-owned sculptures to be displayed at Goodson Recreation Center for a period of one year. The sculptures are selected by the South Suburban Public Art Committee (SSPAC) through a competitive process. South Suburban’s Board of Directors approves the SSPAC selections prior to installation. Goodson Recreation Center is located at 6315 S. University Blvd., Centennial.
The requirements of the Art-on-Loan program are the artist must reside in Colorado, and the sculpture must meet site requirements and be for sale. The artist receives an honorarium for the display. The District receives a 20 percent commission for sculptures that are purchased through the program.
