Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
I’m running to continue my service on the South Suburban Board for a few reasons. I’m passionate, as seen with my involvement and experience in our community over the past eighteen years, about serving our community. In the two years I’ve served on the Board, I’ve learned a tremendous amount about the needs of our community. I strive to ensure we are improving our parks, trails, the services we provide and our recreational facilities, while making sure they are accessible, well-maintained and inclusive for all. I’ve also worked to build and improve relationships with our partner communities. In addition, the District is at a pivotal place with our search for a new Executive Director and there are a number of challenges we face that include maintenance facilities, park planning, as well as updating internal policies. I will continue to work to help ensure eco-friendly initiatives, promote sustainable practices in park management and outdoor spaces for current and future generations by working to create policies that protect and preserve our natural resources.

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
I have a deep connection to the district. I am a lifelong resident of South Suburban and my father worked for South Suburban for 48 years and served as Executive Director for 30. I have grown alongside this district and watched it become what it is today. The vision and purpose of this district has been instilled in me from the beginning. With the search for the district’s third Executive Director in 40 years underway, I am eager to help ensure that South Suburban continues its legacy of excellence. The district has earned four nationally recognized gold medal awards and been named a finalist 12 times, highlighting its commitment to high-quality services.
I believe in fostering a culture of shared ownership, where every employee feels empowered to uphold and enhance the district’s standards, consistently going above and beyond in their performance. South Suburban belongs to all of us, and we all benefit from its exceptional parks, programs, and facilities—built on a foundation of customer service, safety, accessibility, and cleanliness, all of which we share responsibility for. I am passionate about preserving and enhancing the standards and vision of the district, and I believe my experience can contribute to this. As a High School Principal, I have developed skills in budgeting, staff evaluation, and fostering positive school culture—skills that I can apply to the board to ensure the district’s future leadership values both its history and future growth. I would work collaboratively with fellow board members, residents, and district staff to continue SSPRD’s strengths while identifying opportunities for growth.
The motto of Littleton Public Schools—“We are big enough to serve you, but small enough to know you”—resonates with me, as it mirrors the values that make South Suburban special. If elected, I will commit to the following values in every decision I make:
- Upholding the highest standards of programs, parks, and facilities, with a focus on customer service, safety, and a “small-town” feel.
- Fostering shared ownership—“We are all South Suburban.”
- Remaining true to the district’s mission and vision, ensuring close-to-home recreational opportunities for all residents while embracing innovation.
Work/Career:
I earned a bachelor's degree in Recreation from the University of Northern Colorado and started my professional career as the Recreation Director at a residential treatment facility in Denver. In this role, I organized and provided a variety of recreational opportunities for residents. I also built meaningful partnerships with other organizations to offer innovative programs that catered to a diverse community. Part of my role was to work closely with the on-site school, which sparked my passion for education. This led me to pursue a master’s degree in educational leadership, and I currently serve as the Principal of an Alternative High School in the Douglas County School District.
Board experience:
I have no political aspirations, and my lack of board experience means I will approach this role without any special interests or biases toward other entities or organizations. I am a strong collaborator and understand the importance of building solid relationships with other boards, community partners, and stakeholders. As a regular user of South Suburban’s offerings, I am committed to keeping the board focused on enhancing the experience for everyday users and upholding high standards.
Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
I helped establish an alternative/charter school basketball league and volunteered as a coach for many years. Additionally, I have volunteered as a youth coach in South Suburban’s programs for several seasons, coaching my two children. I have also volunteered with my neighborhood community association, assisting the board in organizing recreational activities and programs for local residents.
Recreation interests:
I’ve been fortunate to have access to a wide range of recreation opportunities and have always made the most of Colorado's beautiful days to enjoy outdoor activities. I love golf, softball, pickleball, hiking, biking, sports, yard games, disc golf, and anything that gets me outside and moving. I’m also a frequent user of the recreation centers, pools, and sports complex.
Personal interests:
I love spending time with my family—my wife and two kids. We frequently unwind at our neighborhood park and take our dog, Layla, for walks on the nearby trails. I grew up with a South Suburban park as an extension of my backyard, and I valued the experience of being close to the park and the people enjoying it so much that I eventually bought my own house on the same park. I am so proud to raise my kids to value the same. We enjoy having our morning coffee in the backyard, soaking in the sounds of soccer games, playground chatter, and the simple joy that parks bring. I am grateful to raise my children within this district and proud of my daughter, who just began her first part-time job working for South Suburban. My children are the third generation of Lorenz’s to benefit from the district's many opportunities, and I look forward to seeing this legacy continue into the future. I am deeply motivated to preserve and enhance the vision of South Suburban Parks and Recreation for myself, my family, and all residents of the district. We are all South Suburban!

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
I am passionate about the outdoors and recognize the vital role recreation plays in building strong, healthy communities. Growing up in Colorado, I spent countless hours hiking, camping, and exploring nature, shaping my appreciation for well-maintained parks, trails, and open spaces. I want to ensure our community continues to have access to high-quality recreational opportunities that enhance residents’ quality of life.
With my background in finance and accounting, I bring a fiscal perspective to park planning, maintenance, and investments, ensuring resources are managed responsibly and recreational programs remain accessible and sustainable. I would be honored to contribute my skills and passion to support and enhance our parks and recreation system.
Work/Career:
My career has been in accounting and auditing, working with several firms and a short tenure at an environmental health nonprofit. I earned my CPA license in 2019 and continue to maintain it. Last fall, I returned to school to transition into economics and financial analysis. I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in Mineral and Energy Economics at the Colorado School of Mines.
Board experience:
I have served on several boards and committees, including the Young Professionals and Member Connections Committees of the Colorado Society of CPAs, supporting professional engagement. Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
Beyond my professional involvement, I volunteer at Mission Hills Church in Littleton, leading a Middle School Ministry boys' life group and assisting at winter and summer camps. Previously, I volunteered in the Young Adult Ministry, including a mission trip to Juarez, Mexico, to help build a home for a family.
I volunteer with the American Conservation Coalition, participating in tree plantings, cleanups, and farm volunteer days. Additionally, I have written op-eds, testified at the Colorado State Capitol, and met with U.S. Representatives in Washington, D.C., to discuss energy and environmental policy.
I have also volunteered with Junior Achievement to teach financial literacy, leading full-day programs in 2nd and 6th grade classrooms and working with the Dream Accelerator program, helping high school students explore career paths.
Recreation interests:
I’m always up for an adventure – whether it’s mountain biking, hiking, or running. I make time for the gym, and in winter, you’ll find me on the slopes snowboarding. I also love being on the water – jet skiing, swimming, and scuba diving whenever I get the chance. Camping remains a big part of my life, a tradition I grew up with as a Boy Scout and still enjoy as a way to unplug and reconnect with nature.
Personal interests:
Beyond the outdoors, I enjoy reading, particularly on economics and history. I also value quality time with friends and family, whether sharing a meal or engaging in a lively game night. I’m always eager to explore new places and learn through travel, conversation, and new experiences.

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
My family and I are frequent users of trails, facilities and programs provided by South Suburban Parks and Recreation, and I am interested in helping maintain programs, properties and services that are of consistently high quality. I am a civic-minded person and have been engaged in community and local government affairs for much of my life. It is important for community members to be engaged in the management and operation of Special Districts such as South Suburban Parks and Recreation, which oftentimes have very little citizen involvement in their governance. My participation will help ensure transparent, efficient and effective use of all revenue, including property tax, and responsiveness to residents and communities served by the district.
Work/Career:
As an employee, business founder and owner, my professional life has focused on two career areas that will complement the SSPRD Board. Seventeen years in corporate services and facilities involved directing security and safety programs, building design and operations, leases, property maintenance, contract negotiation and management. Since 2000, a career in hospitality and tourism has provided opportunities for serving guests and visitors as an international tour and travel director, leading destination marketing and management organizations, and working as an interpretive tourist guide. My career success has been supported by education, including a Master of Arts in Organizational Management, vocational training, and multiple professional certifications.
Board experience:
I was elected as a Council Member for the City and County of Broomfield and served on several council-appointed boards and commissions including Parks and Open Space, Liquor Control, Library Board, Flatirons Special District and RTD Liaison. I was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Tourism Office. Upon appointment by County Commissioners, I also served as Chairman of the Board for the Royal Gorge Region / Fremont County Tourism Council. In addition, I have served on the board of directors for a student housing cooperative, EcoCycle Inc., for professional trade and homeowners associations and the chambers of commerce in Broomfield and Cañon City.
Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
Since first undertaking volunteer roles as a high school student my commitments have included serving on community advisory boards, for benevolent organizations, during community events, with professional associations, as a trainer for the American Red Cross, for Children’s Hospital and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, at the Denver Aquarium, as a blood donor, an interpreter with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, Meals on Wheels deliveries, and the Rotary Club of Centennial.
Recreation interests:
Domestic and international travel. RV’ing. Bicycling. Skiing. Hiking. Intramural, community and corporate sports, and routine exercise.
Personal interests:
My marriage, family and grandchildren. Environmental sustainability, particularly waste reduction through composting, reuse and recycling.

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
South Suburban is a dynamic, critically important organization that adds immeasurably to the quality of life and culture of our communities in the south-central Denver region. The recent work to develop the 2022 Strategic Plan and companion Master Plan has set the District in a very positive direction. It is imperative that the District continue in that direction and refine the actions as needed into the next several years. Since learning to ski in the South Suburban program in the late 1960’s, to watching my children benefit from many of the programs in the 1990/2000’s and now using SSPRD services and facilities with time in retirement, I want to contribute whatever I can to ensure a strong and responsive Recreation District for decades to come.
Work/Career:
I recently retired from my position as Senior Vice President for HDR Engineering where I directed business development for the highways, transit, railroad, aviation and maritime business lines. I am a registered civil engineer and retired with 47 years of experience on projects across North America.
Board experience:
I served as the Mayor of the Town of Bow Mar for 10 years during which time I chaired the Metro Mayor’s Caucus (MMC) for 2011-2012. I am now serving as the Board Chair for Civic Results, the 501-c3 that manages the MMC and conducts other activities around Colorado to advance local government programs. I also served on the Board of DRCOG and as the Chair of the DIA Business Partnership
Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
I currently serve on the Board of Directors as the Finance Committee Chair for Christian Living Communities, which is a non-profit company with 10 senior living communities across Colorado. I am also active in the leadership at our church, Littleton United Methodist near downtown Littleton.
Recreation interests:
I enjoy many different recreational activities, trying to do something every day. I currently work out at the Buck Center 2-3 times a week, ride my road bike on the Mary Carter Trail several times a week, or snow ski whenever possible. I play golf frequently at the Littleton and South Suburban Golf Courses and I am learning pickle ball. And when possible, I like to get up to the high country to fish some of our mountain streams.
Personal interests:
We now watch our grandkids on the play fields and facilities that our three girls used. One of my primary hobbies is to work in our yard and garden to grow flowers, decorative trees/shrubs and vegetables in season. I am an avid Broncos and Rockies fan as well as all CSU Ram sports teams.

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
My interest in serving on the South Suburban Parks & Recreation Board of Directors stems directly from a deep connection to the organization’s vision statement of providing innovative park and recreation opportunities for our diverse communities. As someone that has spent twenty-five plus years in intercollegiate athletics, I understand the value of creating positive experiences for our community through participation in athletics, recreational and leisure activities. Outside of the K-12 school system, South Suburban provides the biggest anchor for our community by being a steward of nature and sustainability. My family and I have benefited from SSPR by participating in basketball, ice skating, esports, summer camps, karate and coaching (for my wife). I understand the treasure that South Suburban is and hope to bring my experience of fiscal responsibility and facility maintenance since I currently oversee business operations for the University of Denver Athletic Department. I seek to serve on the Board to actively participate in shaping South Suburban's future, ensuring it not only meets but exceeds the expectations outlined in its strategic plan, thereby enhancing the lives of our community members.
Work/Career:
I currently serve as the CFO/Assistant Vice Chancellor/Deputy Athletic Director for the University of Denver Athletic Department. In my career, I have served in different positions with The University of Miami Athletic department, The University of North Carolina Athletic Department and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
Board experience:
This would be my first opportunity to serve on a board.
Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
I currently serve as a den leader for my son’s Cub Scout Den at Sandburg Elementary. I volunteer whenever possible in both of my children’s school systems.
Recreation interests:
Hiking, Biking, Karate and watching/participating in my children’s activities.

Why are you interested in becoming a candidate for the Board?
As an in-District resident of the South Suburban community for more than two decades, I have first-hand experience with the many benefits South Suburban provides. I am a candidate for this year’s Board of Directors Election because I believe there are areas that this Board has an opportunity to improve for the benefit of the in-District community. Specifically:
Transparency - Taxpayers have a right to know how their taxes are being spent.
Focus on Community - I believe maintaining our existing facilities and parks provides as much benefit to our community as the construction of new facilities. Listening to our taxpayers and focusing on improving existing amenities and services should be a priority.
Election Reform - The low participation in this election does not allow for a meaningful representation of the voters within the District.
Work/Career:
Current - Owner, Watson Marketing & Public Relations, LLC - I work closely with businesses and local publications as a freelance writer and marketing specialist. Work samples and client information available on my Instagram page @watsonmarketingandpr.
In addition, I have over 15 years of experience as a marketing professional for architectural and engineering firms including CH2M Hill, GEI Engineering and DHM landscape architecture.
Board experience:
Current - member Arapahoe County Cultural Council (ACCC) - I was appointed by Arapahoe County Commissioner Carrie Warren-Gully to a three-year term. As a member of ACCC, I review grant applications and make funding recommendations for how Arapahoe County should allocate tax revenue received from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.
Additional board experience includes Marketing Co-Chair for the Denver Arthritis Walk and serving as the Public Relations Committee Lead for the Colorado Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services.
Past and current service to volunteer organizations:
Current - Volunteer coach for i-9 Youth Sports. Tennis, soccer, and t-ball coach for children ranging in ages from four to 10 years old. I have also been a referee for youth soccer.
Current - League of Women Voters - Voter Services Committee. I have volunteered to register new voters at naturalization ceremonies in Arapahoe County, and I have assisted the League with candidate forums for recent local elections.
Littleton Public School (LPS) - I have nine years of experience as an in-classroom volunteer with LPS and for the past two years I have volunteered with the After-Prom Committee at Arapahoe High School.
Recreation interests:
I enjoy several sports at the recreational level. I play tennis, volleyball, and pickleball on a fairly regular basis. I’ve taken numerous classes at Goodson Recreation Center including water aerobics. And I regularly meet friends to walk the trails in our community. You can often find me walking the Highline Canal by Goodson or enjoying our beautiful trails and natural areas along the South Platte.
Personal interests:
Reading and writing are high up on my list of personal interests. And while I don’t consider myself a “foodie,” I like to cook. I have three adult children. All three children attended LPS schools and grew up being involved with South Suburban programs and activities.
